The first reported sighting of Mothman was on November 15, 1966. Sightings continued until December 1967 when the Silver Bridge collapsed, leaving 46 people dead.

Point Pleasant

The city is the county seat of Mason County lying at the convergence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers. It was the scene of a fierce skirmish between AmerIndians and settlers in 1774.

Shawnee Chief Cornstalk tried to make peace and was brutally murdered. Before he died, he cursed the land. Between 1880 and 1978, at least seventeen major disasters happened there.

Point Pleasant is also the home of Mothman, a cryptoid that has been witnessed by over 100 people and studied by cryptozoologists.

Sightings

1965…. A 17 year old male saw a winged man.

Summer 1966…. A doctor’s wife sighted a creature about 6 feet tall flying rapidly at her.

November 12th, 1966…. Men were digging a grave in a cemetery. They saw a winged man-like creature flutter from some trees.

November 14th 1966…. Newell Partridge and his wife were watching TV when the screen acted up. They heard a strange high pitched noise. Their hunting dog was on the porch and began to howl. The set was turned off, but the dog continued wailing. Newell went to see what upset the dog. He saw two huge red lights, like large eyes near the barn. The dog ran off of the porch toward the lights.

Newell went inside to get a gun, but decided not to go out again. The next day, the dog was gone. Soon, Newell would read about another strange sighting.

On the night of November 15th 1966, the strange creature made his presence known again. Two couples were driving by an abandoned TNT plant. They saw two huge eyes and a winged man about 6 feet tall. They panicked and tried to get away from it. Then, they saw the same or another grotesque creature in front of them. It spread its wings and followed the car, keeping up with it as the vehicle sped at 100 mph.

The couples reported this and seeing the body of a large dog to Deputy Millard Halstead. The deputy knew them and had no reason to doubt what they said. The five of them returned to the area of the sightings. As Halstead parked his squad car in near the TNT plant, his police radio emitted a strange sound, like a record playing at a high speed. The five of them searched for the dog’s body, but couldn’t find it.

The next day, a conference about the incident was held which made international headlines. Once the news broke about the sighting of the creature named Mothman, others reported seeing it.

November 16th, 1966, four people were going to the car after visiting friends. They saw a large grey beast with glowing eyes and huge wings. They returned to the safety of the house. Once inside, the people could hear the creature on the porch and see its eyes. It disappeared before police arrived.

Enter Cryptozoologists

John Keel and Loren Coleman, highly respected cryptologists, investigated Mothman and have written about him. During Keel’s investigation, he talked to a woman who saw Mothman in 1961. She sighted him by Chief Cornstalk Hunting Grounds in West Virginia.

There is no doubt that people have seen something that was between 6 and 7 feet tall, walked in a shuffling manner, had glowing red eyes, large wings and flew at an amazing speed. Some said it was grey while others said it was brown.

Could it be that there were more than one Mothman? Could there be a relationship between Cornstalk’s curse and Mothman?
