Throughout the years, there have been a number of reported Bigfoot sightings in America. Though considered a cryptic creature, many declare the primate real.

Bigfoot (also known as the Abominable Snowman, and Sasquatch, or Yeti, depending on worldly location) is a massive (reported but unconfirmed) bipedal ape and one of the most popular American cryptic creatures of legend, along with Chupacabras, and black panthers. Sightings of the behemoth ape have been recorded in many different places worldwide.

Name and Physical Description of Mythical Creature Bigfoot

One of the most reported creatures in the field of cryptozoology, Bigfoot is said to resemble a large ape, which walks on two feet. It has brown or black hair, according to accounts, except in snowy areas and in high altitudes, where it is white, and known by Abominable Snowman, or by the Tibetan word "Yeti."

"Bigfoot" is the name given to the creature by North Americans, although Sasquatch is a variant of a name provided indigenous Canadians that also describes the American ape. According to witness accounts, Bigfoot stands at a height of 6 to10 feet, making him a formidable looking cryptid indeed.

History of Bigfoot Sightings in America

The legendary creature Bigfoot has made appearances in folk legend throughout American history. The creature has also been acknowledged by indigenous peoples of the Northwest, and stories of sightings have been passed down to the present. Different tribal populations had been referring to the same (or same type) of creature in different areas by different names, and by all accounts, the cryptic creature was described as a large and hairy man-like animal.

In 1951, a man named Eric Shipton photographed what was reportedly a Yeti (Abominable Snowman, the white version, found in snowy areas) footprint while exploring the Himalayas. After that, ape-men became increasingly popular subjects of cryptozoologists.

Not long after the photo was released, such findings (footprints of the mythical creature) were reported around the United States. Since, reports of actual sightings of Bigfoot have come in from around the country, most notably the Pacific coast states, with the state of Washington ahead of all other states in the number of sightings.

Suggestions and Explanations for Bigfoot Sightings in America

As there are other great, hairy mammals living in the parts of the country where Bigfoot sightings tend to occur (namely, black and brown bears), it is probably that some sightings, if the cryptid itself is not real, were actually those of bears.

Other creatures, such as gorillas and sloths that could possibly have escaped from zoos (something sloths are not terribly likely to do) are thought to possibly account for some Bigfoot sightings in America. Many sightings are likely hoaxes.

Cryptozoology is a popular and intriguing study for some. The thought of curious mythical creatures of folk legend that have yet to be discovered is captivating, and right here in the United States, Bigfoot is a top cryptid, rejected by science, but declared real by many witnesses.
