Something stalks the moors of England. There have been sightings of Alien Big Cats and spectral hounds, but few have been photographed. This mystery animal has several!

Dartmoor of the English Moors

Dartmoor in Devon, Southern England is one of her last wildernesses. Heather grows amid Neolithic structures. It looks like it should be haunted, and it is!

It is home to the legendary Whish, Wisht, Wish or Wist Hounds, ghostly dogs. It is said that the black canines are omens of death and those who see them will die that night or within a year.

It has also been said that another four-legged black creature with fiery eyes and an eerie howl lives in Dartmoor. Recently, pictures have been taken of this beast.

What stalks the wild windswept countryside?

The Beast

The pictures, taken by Martin Whitley, a falconer, show an animal with powerful large front legs, rounded ears, a long tail and a thick shaggy coat walking near Hound Tor in the moor. The animal was oblivious to the noisy group of school children yards away.

Whitley said the beast was about 200 yards from him when he took the picture. The black and grey mystery animal was the size of a miniature pony. At first, it appeared to be a feline, but later it seemed ursine.

Some people think it is an ABC, Alien Big Cat. Others think it is a large dog, a wolverine or a bear. Whitley, who has worked with dogs for all of his life, is certain the creature is not a dog and admits to seeing a black feline the size of a collie years before. There have been many reports of phantom black cat and bear sightings in Britain.

Mark Fraser, the founder of Big Cats in Britain, a research organization, has said the animal resembles a bear or a wolverine or a big dog, depending on the photo.

Another theory is that the animal is a boar. In December of 2005, animal rights activists raided Al Desdames farm. He lost more that 100 boars. Some were killed by farmers and others were victims of motor vehicle accidents, but it is believed that the surviving animals bred and about 175 boars roam the moors.

Or, Is the Beast a Dog Named Troy?

Lucinda Reid saw the pictures and believes the beast is her pet Newfoundland dog, Troy who weighs 168 pounds. From a distance, the huge canine looks like a mystery beast.

Reid and Troy often walk by the Tor near where the picture was taken. Some days, Troy just takes off on his own to walk in the moors.
